Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vigilance the same as my employer’s workers’ comp or disability insurance?

No. Vigilance is supplemental insurance designed to help fill gaps that other policies may have. It pays in addition to benefits provided by other insurance, including workers’ comp, disability and/or health insurance.

Why would I need supplemental insurance if I’m already covered by my employer’s insurance?

Workers’ Comp and disability provide limited benefits.  Most states limit the maximum benefit to two-thirds of an employee’s salary and often cap weekly benefit amounts regardless of salary, which can result in income gaps after an accident.

And if you’re an independent nurse contractor or volunteer, you may not be eligible for benefits at all since Workers’ Comp typically doesn’t cover 1099 employees or volunteers.

Some states also impose a waiting period before you can collect benefits, which means you could end up paying costly medical expenses out-of-pocket during that time.

Is this duplicative of my health insurance?

No. Vigilance isn’t meant to replace your health insurance.  It supplements existing coverage and may help to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance.

Wouldn’t health insurance cover all medical costs associated with a sharps injury?

Not necessarily. You may have out-of-pocket medical costs after an accidental sharps injury if you have a high deductible health plan.

And if you’re infected with HIV, Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C as a result, the costs may not end there. A typical 12-week course of Hepatitis C treatment, for example, can cost up to $84,000—but not all health insurance plans cover the cost of medication and those that do may require a monthly co-pay.*

Vigilance is designed to help offset out-of-pocket costs after a covered sharps injury so that you can focus on what matters most.

What is a Felonious Assault?

A Felonious Assault is any intentional use of force upon you performed by another person that is not your immediate family member or an individual who resides with you on a permanent basis. Such use of force must be intended to cause you bodily harm, and be considered a felony or a misdemeanor in the jurisdiction in which it occurs. Felonious Assault may include, but is not limited to, any of the following criminal acts: robbery; theft; hijacking; assault; battery; sniping; murder; manslaughter; civil disturbance; or kidnapping.

I volunteer at a blood bank in my spare time.  Would I be covered there, too?

Yes!  With Vigilance, you’re covered wherever you work and/or volunteer as a healthcare worker within the U.S.

Are the benefits income-based?

No.  If you qualify for any of the benefits, you receive the full amount shown in your policy regardless of your income.

Are there any restrictions on how I can use the benefit?

Nope! The benefit is yours to use in whatever way helps the most. Use it to help pay for prescription medication, cover your health insurance deductible, or put it towards some much-needed R&R to take your mind off of things.
